There is absolutely no substitute for putting in the time and effort to create a valuable website that delivers something of value to its visitors. And it does require time and effort. But you can also make it fun. For example, I like to look for videos on YouTube that support the message of my sites and embed them. Just looking for the vids is fun. But, most importantly, a site that has loads of focused, interesting stuff for its visitors will ride smoothly over any and all of the search engine algorithm changes that so many people get all strung up over.
